Don’t Pray for Kanye

ADHD and other Madness
Music
Mental Health

Unless you stay under a rock, you heard about Kanye West’s meltdown and subsequent hospitalization. I’m a huge fan of his, his music has helped me through some seriously tough times. My heart breaks for his wife and his family.

Having said that, I need people, especially black people to do me a favor: don’t ask for ONE MORE prayer in that man’s name. Not even a quarter of a prayer. That probably sounds harsh, and it was meant to. It’s not that belief offends me; belief is personal.

What offends me is that EVERY TIME somebody’s mental health comes into question, everyone wants to bend their knees instead of extending their hand to get them some damn help. They want to murmur under their breath instead of learning about the struggle. How can you supplicate on the behalf of anyone if you don’t know what the need is?

It shouldn’t take for celebrities to lose their minds to start this conversation, yet we always end up back here. Do me a favor: save your breath. Don’t pray for Kanye. He’s going to get what he needs as long as the people who are in charge of caring for him follow through.

Instead, why don’t you stop telling your friends, family and neighbors they’re just making it up when they tell you they are having trouble carrying on? Why don’t YOU go get some help and stop walking around with the same baggage year after year after year? It’s Thanksgiving week but some of you are so depressed you can’t face the day, much less feel gratitude for it.

Black people: let’s wake up, get off our knees and get about the business of healing. At least then we could get through dinner without having to clap back.

Until next time,

René
